The move is a great move for environmentalists. The closing down of Longannet power station, comes just a week after Earth Hour. Earth Hour is an event to raise awareness about Climate Change.
Coal power has been a large part of Scotlands output of energy. However, in recent years, Scotland has been moving towards greener energy. With things such as wind farms becoming more noticeable.
WWF Scotland welcomed the news. They said, “The closure of Longannet marks an historic and inevitable step in our energy transition as Scotland becomes one of the first nations to end its use of coal for power.
“While the power station has served the nation for many years, the world is moving forward to cleaner, cheaper forms of renewable energy generation.”
The news is encouraging , however, there is still a long way for Scotland and the UK to become environmentally friendly, through energy production. This is because, there are still oil fields around the UK. And, one of the biggest is in Scotland, in the North Sea.
