The threat to coral reefs comes through bleaching. The bleaching is thought to be occur because of warming waters, due to Climate Change.
Opening up the Great Barrier Reef would cause the coral reefs more damage, and it would also cause more damage to the animals which live in, and around the Great Barrier Reef.
it is not clear when mining in the Great Barrier Reef will begin. However, it is known that the Queensland government gave the go ahead for the mining on the 3rd of April.
