There is no compassionate, or civil way to kill, it is a brutal, bloody and callous act. Some people like to buy into the myth of humane slaughter. The two words 'humane' and 'slaughter' are at odds with one another. Humane means to act in a compassionate and sympathetic nature.
Generally eating dead animals is selfish, and, a Dutch study provides evidence of that. Further evidence would be that we do not need meat to survive, therefore, the pain, distress and violence that we put animals through is needless.
In many ways, I think that most of us know that killing animals for food is wrong. Even meat eaters, I would argue, on a subconscious level, know that what we do to animals for food is wrong. Why? Because, think of where slaughterhouses are - they are out of sight. In the middle of nowhere. You very rarely find slaughterhouses in the middle of cities, where most people live. Most people want to eat meat, few people want to witness, or even acknowledge that animals are slaughtered in such a vicious way.
Or worse, when pictures are posted on social media, to highlight the cruelty, and barbaric nature of slaughterhouses (or factory farming) you will have many people say that they don't want to see these types of pictures.
No one wants to see animals have blood pouring out of their lifeless body, but, to deny that it happens, is to turn a blind eye to it. All looking away does is ease our own consciences of the suffering that is caused in slaughterhouses. But acknowledging it, and highlighting it to others, can help us stop factory farming and slaughter.
