The idea of Serpant Day, is partly, to do with discouraging these negative connotations, and to celebrate snakes, as much as we do with other wild animals. The injustices and cruelty that snakes face are largely overlooked, especially when you compare them to other animals. Perhaps their are two reasons for this. The first being that the negative connotations which have been given to snakes have stuck with most of us. So, we don't stand up for them as much. Another reason why snakes are not given as much publicity as other animals is because, they are not cute and cuddly.
If you are not convinced that snake don't need our protection, then here are some facts about the cruelties inflicted on snake worldwide.
1. Snakes are used for wine
In the far east, snakes are used for wine. And blood...yes, you can drink snake blood.
The snakes are often killed in front of tourists, or people who are around. The snakes usually have their venom remove, so they cannot attack, or more like, prevent themselves from being attacked. This often causes the snakes much suffering, and usually death.
Drinking snake wine, or snake blood is not only cruel, it can also feed into them being captured from the wild, and be responsible for the reduction in snake species.
Westerns who go to the Far East often are responsible for holding up this cruel trade, by buying into it. The fact that there is not as much outrage as snakes being killed on the streets, as their is with cats and dogs on the streets, show that there is an outbalance here. An unfair outbalance, when we seem to prioritise furry, or familar animals, with those who are not furry, and cute.
Snakes are used in clothes, and shoes, like a lot of other creatures. But, we often don't hear much about how snakes are treated cruelly for fashion.
Snakes, like other animals who are killed for their skins, are killed barbarically, and left to suffer. PETA estimates that there are almost half a million Pythons who are killed in Indonesia alone. For their skins, to make things such as bags, and shoes.
These snakes suffer horrible deaths. They are blugeoned over the head, and hung upside down like washing, were it can take up to ten mintues for them to die.
These snakes are likely to be taken from the nearby rainforests, meaning that the ecosystem suffers, as well as the animal.
There is no need for us to kill snakes for fashion, or shoes, not when there are just as good synthetics around.
